What is Foosball?

Foosball is a game that almost everyone knows. You can find it in arcades, pool halls, bars, and home game rooms. Although maybe people are familiar with the game, most don’t know its origins.

“Foosball” is the American spelling of the German contraction fussball (literally “foot-ball” in German). Americans call football “soccer,” so the game is also known as table soccer. Elsewhere it is known as table football.

The game was invented by Harold Searles Thornton in 1922 and patented in 1923 in the UK. Similar games may have existed prior, but the game that we know today was created by Thornton. He wanted to create a football game that could be played in the home. His uncle Louis took the inspiration to the US to be patented in 1927.

In 2002, the International Table Soccer Federation (ITSF) was established in France in order to promote the sport of Table Soccer as an organizing body, regulating international competitions, and establishing the game with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and General Association of International Sport Federation (GAISF).

Rules
Foosball can be played one-on-one or in teams. To start the game, serve the ball through one of the side holes in the table. You can also begin a game by placing the the ball at the feet of a figure in the center of the field. Rotate the bars to kick the ball in the opponent’s goal in order to score.

Some shots are considered illegal. This varies from who is playing or hosting the tournament. Spinning is the act of using the palm of the hand to quickly spin the bar 360 degrees or more, instead of using the wrist. Sometimes, regular foosmen are prohibited from spinning, while the keepers at each end are allowed to.

You win the game by scoring a predetermined amount of points. Usually it is 5, 10, or 11 points. Rules are typically flexible and are agreed upon before the match starts. If playing a casual game, make sure to establish what is and isn’t illegal, as well as what point value causes victory. This can avoid unnecessary confrontation and keep the game fun!

Foosball Tables
Foosball tables can be made out of plastic, wood, or metal. Some toy tables are only a couple of feet long, while full size tables are usually four feet long. Some custom tables can be as long as eight feet! There are several types of tables that contain multiple games. These multi-game tables can contain pool, air hockey, rod hockey, and football dice as well.

Typically, tables are arranged as follows:

Row 1: Goalkeeper —————— 1 foosman (sometimes 2 or 3)
Row 2: Defense ———————- 2 foosmen (sometimes 3)
Row 3: Opponent’s attack ———- 3 foosmen (sometimes 2)
Row 4: Midfield ———————— 5 foosmen (sometimes 4 or 6)
Row 5: Opponent’s midfield ——- 5 foosmen (sometimes 4 or 6)
Row 6: Attack ————————– 3 foosmen (sometimes 2)
Row 7: Opponent’s defense ——- 2 foosmen (sometimes 3)
Row 8: Opponent’s goalkeeper — 1 foosman (sometimes 2 or 3)
