Asics Gel Kayano 23 Review

The Japanese brand ASICS has surprised us with the launch of ASICS Gel Kayano 23, the latest version of this successful legend. For those who do not know what we are talking about, Asics Gel Kayano 23 is a daily training shoe, with stability control and oriented to runners. The first model was born in the mid 90’s and since then the Kayano is installed in the upper area, where only the most important of the industry are concentrated.

Asics Gel-Kayano 23 Running Shoes have the following features:

The Asics Gel-Kayano 23 running shoes are light running shoes and very suitable for the overpronating runner. Overpronation is characterized by the sagging of the foot and the inward tilting of the foot and only during walking or running. With these shoes this is countered by the Dynamic DuoMax technology in the heel.

Technical Analysis Asics Gel Kayano 23

Midsole

In the midsole there are the reasons why so many speak well of this shoe: excellent cushioning and great control of stability. How does ASICS achieve it? With technology, design and materials. Let’s explain it.

The type of pressed EVA that uses the ASICS Gel Kayano 23 is Flyte Foam, a newly created compound by the Japanese brand. It is up to 55% lighter than traditional compounds and offers up to 76% more cushioning in laboratory tests. Said fast, but how can it be otherwise, Flyte Foam comes to ASICS after a long time of work. Flyte Foam made its appearance for the first time in the most technological shoe that we have known for a long time: ASICOS Metarun and in its composition a natural fibers are used that provide reinforcement to the structure while reducing fatigue of the material.

Inside that Flyte Foam material are inserted gel capsules (which ASICS calls “Rearfoot and Forefoot Gel® Cushioning System). His work is fundamental because it is responsible for minimizing the effects of the impact on the ground when running and while making the transition in the tread. We will find this gel in both the heel area and the midfoot. On the inner side of the midsole we find a material of different color that is in charge of proportional stability: Dynamic Duomax.

It is the usual Duomax, but since a few years ago ASICS added the “Dynamic” in front of it. Well, exactly when Nike invented “Dynamic Support” by launching it in its first Nike Lunarglide model. This was a system that really provided stability in a dynamic way (that is, more or less stability according to each runner and each step).

Well, in the worst action I remember of ASICS, their “commercial” response was practically to add that word “Dynamic” ahead and, come on, we are already equal to the competition! Of course, the work of the Duomax material, which has a higher density than the rest of the midsole, continues to do well, as expected.

The template is on the border between the midsole and the upper. Sometimes it is explained in the upper section and others in the midsole section. This time it will be the second option. And it is not because of the name of the template: “Comfordry X-40 Sockliner” (how spectacular it is), but because ASICS gives him attributions to improve the foot bounce. Obviously its function is also to provide comfort, but it is added more particularities: it promotes breathability which helps regulate the humidity that is generated inside the shoe.

Turning these ASICS Gel Kayano 23 and observing them from the sole, we observe some elements that work together both from the sole, as from the midsole and that in ASICS is forced to explain it starting from the end: Impact Guidance System. I.G.S. It is a sum of technologies that will work to optimize the landing, transition and takeoff … or what is the same: the phases of the tread. Thus, the Guidance Line is a line that traverses the entire shoe lengthwise and will help guide the tread, from the heel to the toe. Trusstic System, a semi-rigid piece, also collaborates in the same, but its main contribution will be to try to contain the twisting of the foot during the transition.

Sole

There are two main materials in the sole: AHAR + and Solid Rubber Outsole. The first, ASICS High Abrasion Rubber, is a very abrasion resistant compound to which ASICS adds carbon. Its main function, apart from traction, is to provide durability and it is only placed in the places of maximum wear, since it is expensive and heavy. In this case in the heel. Solid Rubber Outsole instead is a more balanced combination of durability and grip. It pulls better than the AHAR +, but in return it wears out earlier. It is placed in the metatarsal area to take better advantage of the grip, more necessary here.

At the design level, in these ASICS Gel Kayano 23, there are large plates that are also profiled with slots to improve traction. So, if we discard the piece of the toe and the last of the heel, we see that of those large plates there are 6 in the metatarsal and four in the flat area of the heel. A lot of surface in contact with the ground which gives it a plus of stability and durability.

Upper

The star in the upper cut of the shoe is undoubtedly FluidFit, which is the combination of an elastic mesh along with reinforcements, also elastic and that together allow an adjustment, but softened. This mesh is distributed by the shoe without seams, thanks to the heat-sealed, so some more sensitive runners avoid the chafing produced by seams. There is clearly an outer layer, with fairly open perforations, while the inside is more closed and hugging the contour of the foot. Breathability and comfort is what ASICS seeks with this combination.

The heel is guaranteed its stability when hitting the ground thanks to Clutch Counter. The vast majority of shoes carry this reinforcement internally so it is not visible. In contrast, in ASICS Gel Kayano 23 this reinforcement is exoesqueletal (exterior).

Finally, the 3M brand signs the reflective elements of the shoe, so useful for security in dark conditions.

Review

Like a glove. It is the feeling when you put these ASICS Gel Kayano 23. Not only has the design of the latest editions of this model been stylized, it is that when you wear them you are surprised how it has evolved from that billet and coarse aspect of many years ago to this stylized and soft to the finished touch.

When rolling with them, it remains. If you have to tell the people of ASICS is that they evolve everything they want, but that kind touch of this daily training shoe with stability do not lose it. The sensations they transmit are excellent, in cushioning, in stability (without losing being soft), lightness, subjection …

The trainings are falling and the behavior does not yield. To everything that transmits is added the sensation that they resist the sessions well. It is true that they ask to go more by asphalt or hard surface than by another site, but they behave quite well also by land of the park or by road. It is noted that the design of the studs is better defended by the asphalt. There are other solutions to go through the mountain.
